A Comparative Immunohistochemical Study of CD105 Expression in Peripheral and Central Giant Cell Granuloma
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Despite similar histopathological features, peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) and central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) differ in their biological behavior. PGCG and CGCG are hemorrhagic/vascular lesions, clinically and microscopically. Angiogenesis is necessary for the growth and development of lesions and affects their clinical behavior. CD105 is a useful vascular marker for assessment of angiogenesis. This study aimed to assess the CD105 expression in PGCG and CGCG by immunohistochemistry in order to determine angiogenesis in these lesions. Materials and methods: A total of 30 PGCG and 30 CGCG specimens were stained for CD105 marker. The expression of this marker and the angiogenic potential of lesions were determined by calculating the mean vascular density (MVD). Results: All specimens revealed immunostaining of CD105 marker. MVD was 26.56 ± 11.03 in PGCG and 22.32 ± 12.81 in CGCG. Herein, the two groups did not differ significantly (P = 0.390). Conclusion: This study demonstrated neovascularization in PGCG and CGCG. The angiogenic potential between the two groups did not significantly differ. This finding may suggest that the distinct clinical behavior of PGCG and CGCG is independent of the number of vessels and angiogenesis.

INTRODUCTION Oral peripheral and central giant cell granulomas are lesions with little-known etiology and pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare matrix metalloproteinases-2 and osteopontin protein expression in the multinucleated giant cells and mononuclear cells of the peripheral and central giant cell granuloma lesions. METHODS In this retrospective study, the presen...
full textA Comparative Study of Cathepsin D Expression in Peripheral and Central Giant Cell Granuloma of the Jaws by Immunohistochemistry Technique
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Peripheral and central giant cell granuloma are two common benign lesions of the oral cavity. In spite of histopathological similarities, they have different clinical behaviors. Cathepsin D is a lysosomal enzyme which has different functions on the basis of protein and applied peptide cleavage. PURPOSE This research aimed to evaluate and compare the expression level o...

OBJECTIVE This study investigated whether some components of the extracellular matrix and CD68 expression may drive the differences between the central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) of the jaws and giant cell tumor (GCT) of long bones, which present distinct evolution and clinical behavior. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eight cases of CGCG and 7 cases of GCT were selected and immunohistochemically analy...

full textCorrelation Between Immunohistochemical Profile of Giant Cell Granuloma with Pathogenesis and Biologic Behavior: A Review Article
Abstract: Background and Aim: Giant cell Granulomas (central and peripheral) are two fairly common lesions of the oral cavity with uncertain etiology and pathogenesis. As well, the reason for their different biologic behavior is not well understood yet. This study aimed to review the immunohistochemical profile of giant cell granuloma and its correlation with pathogenesis and biologic behavior....
